Rear View Cameras
Rear view cameras are also known as backup cameras. This is a type of video camera that you can install on the back of your car that enables you to see as you reverse your car. The design of the camera is different than your typical video camera. The image is horizontally flipped and a mirror image is produced. This mirror image is necessary because of the location of the camera and the driver. If the image was not flipped the camera would be pointless because then objects would be placed incorrectly in the image.
Traditionally backup cameras were only used on commercial vehicles and large recreational vehicles such as motor homes. However, with the increase of other electronic devices such as DVD players and navigation systems, car manufacturers felt that this would be another good addition to the vehicle. However, installation of this type of camera is not standard on all vehicles and it has to be added as an option. When these cameras are installed on the vehicle when you buy it, the image can be seen in your rear view mirror.
You can also purchase backup cameras separately and install them yourself. These cameras come with a viewer that you can mount to your dash and the wiring in your car is installed in such a way so that each time you put the car in reverse, the image will be automatically displayed on your viewer. There are also some special edition cameras that have the capacity for night vision as well. These cameras have a built in light that illuminates whatever is behind your vehicle.
There has been an increase in the sales of these types of cameras, with parents typically being the people who buy them. Most commercials and marketing ploys will target people with families because these are people who traditionally have been known to run over a bike or toy in the backyard.
